This series of lectures presents the concluding part of the literary and cultural history of the United States from colonial times until today. It will start with the development of modernism in the arts around 1900, covering the new trends and experiments in poetry, drama and prose in the 1920s, the awakening of a new African American self-awareness and aesthetics during the Harlem Renaissance, the development of the novel up to WWII and into the Cold War, and finally, discussing the new forms of social protest, public art, ethnic and minority cultures and literatures, connected to the emergence of a 'postmodern' culture in the 1960s. The series will end with a discussion of most recent trends and developments in contemporary American literature and culture.
