Beschreibung:
Have you ever wondered why it is always “now”? In this course, students will be introduced to the fundamental role and importance of time in cognition. You will be introduced to the various models of time perception: Intrinsic (e.g., neuronal network models) and dedicated (e.g., Internal Clock) models. We will look at basic paradigms in studying time perception (prospective and retrospective paradigm), tasks and methods (temporal bisection; temporal reproduction; experience sampling method). We will learn about the neural basis of time perception, in particular of interval timing. Time perception is modulated by emotion, motivation, and social factors. In addition, it is altered in several mental disorders (depression, schizophrenia). Furthermore, temporal illusions (as in the area of perceptual causality), also exists in normal subjects. Students will learn how time perception develops ontogenetically, in children. You will be introduced to the Philosophy of Time Consciousness (Husserl) and how it is extended in the contemporary framework of “Fractal Time” (Vrobel). Finally, we will discuss the experience of “passage of time” across the lifetime.
Various instruction methods – lecture, oral presentation, reading assignments – will be used. This course yields 6 ECTS points that can be earned by a ppt-presentation; an essay/a video or podcast; a short personal reflection paper (“MyTime”).
