Course description
Cities have come to play a major role in the field of migration and refuge. Cities on a global scale define themselves as ‘solidarity cities’ or ‘sanctuary cities’. They question the existing national policies and connect between them to address the global dynamics of migration and their impact at the local scale. Cities thus are key sites for understanding dynamics of migrant accommodation and integration and refugee protection globally. Cities are arenas where social problems accentuate themselves, and where socio-economic transformations, developments and problems first manifest themselves. Cities have increasingly started to act independently when it comes to issues of integrating migrants and refugees and municipalities, and civil society actors have at the same time received greater responsibilities for integration services from national governments. This MA level course will address the role of cities in relation to solidarity practices, collective identities, citizenship and policy frameworks.
The course will introduce different approaches to conceptualizing and analyzing solidarity, municipalism, localism, migration policies, scalar politics and city networks. We will work on and with examples from especially Europe and North America but also seek to bring in perspectives from elsewhere.
The course will be organized and taught by lecturers from Aalborg and Osnabrück universities as well as include guest lecturers from elsewhere. The ten individual sessions will contain lectures and active participation of students through group work and presentations. Students will be collaborating across universities.
