Doing Field Work. Ethical Considerations, Research Methods and Practical Requirements

This seminar aims to provide an introduction to planning and conducting field work for MA students with a focus on (forced) migration, peace and conflict studies. This includes critical reflections on prerequisites, aims and conditions for field work, while it also involves a familiarisation with selected methods often applied during field research. Concretely, next to an engagement with research ethics and critical self-reflection in preparation for, during and after field research, this seminar places focus on qualitative interviewing, focus group discussions and quantitative survey design. Students will thoroughly discuss and practice these methods individually as well as in groups in the course of the seminar week.
This seminar is a block course and will mainly take place in the introductory week of the winter term 2024/25. This requires participants to study content independently and complete assignments BEFORE the week starts, as there will not be sufficient time to do them during the week! Assignments form the basis of the seminar and its discussions, so students should bring them to the respective session in any format (printed or digital). The sessions serve as room for exchange, feedback and discussion among students and with the lecturer. The seminar has an a mandatory preparatory online meeting on October 1st, 2024 in which its structure and assignments will be thoroughly explained.
Content-wise, the seminar is divided into three main parts: On the first block day, the main foundational questions regarding field research are explored: what is field research? For what purposes is it used? What are benefits, challenges and problems? What aspects are particularly important when conducting field research in (forced) migration, peace and conflict studies? These questions are reflected with particular emphasis on research ethics. On the second and third day, the focus is placed on selected methods commonly applied during field research in the social sciences. Here, students learn the foundations for qualitative interviewing, focus group discussions and survey design and practice the application of these methods. This is accompanied by critical reflections on opportunities and traps. On the fourth day, students have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge on selected aspects regarding the practicalities of doing field work, while there will be a guest input sharing insights into personal field work experiences.
To document their reflection process on the pros and cons of conducting field research during their studies, students will develop a portfolio that is going to be submitted on 1st December 2024.
