In this seminar, we will consider Shakespeare’s others and outsiders via two plays: Othello and The Tempest. The course will bring together historically contextualized readings of the playwright’s contemporary intertexts, and analyses through lenses of race, gender, colonialism and class. We will investigate how Shakespeare’s works travel and the different meanings they accrue in different (performative, historical) contexts, ‘Shakespeare’ as emblematic of an English literary canon and Englishness itself, as well as early modern fashionings of a cultural vocabulary of otherness whose traces continue to be relevant in our own time.
