Our seminar on the emergence of the "global refugee regime" during the first half of the 20th century will explore patterns of forced migration in Europe and beyond, focusing on how nation-states, international organizations, and NGOs began to negotiate and develop a framework for refugee protection anchored in international law. Drawing inspiration from the theoretical approach of SFB 1604 at IMIS, we will trace the evolution of several status categories central to this migration regime, specifically "refugee" and "displaced person" by analyzing a broad range of primary sources. Special attention will be given to academic knowledge production, examining how scholarly contributions have shaped the conceptual history and transformation of key concepts and categories within the "global refugee regime." By the end of this seminar, participants will have a deeper understanding of the historical processes and intellectual foundations that have shaped "refugee policies" throughout the 20th century and continue to influence reactions to forced migration today.
